That’s why we are consistently following our strategy of offering customers an even broader portfolio of products and services so they can better manage their health. Because we know that the easier it is for customers to take charge themselves without cumbersome trips for every potential ailment, the better patient outcomes and the greater the level of customer loyalty.

This year alone sees several key strategic initiatives come to fruition to reach the goal of maximum consumer engagement and loyalty. The expansion of medication management is one of our strategic pillars. Together with the digital health experts SMARTPATIENT and MEDAPP, we as one of Europe’s leading online pharmacies are taking on a pioneering role in this area. Our focus here is on digital service offerings that support patients in taking their medications regularly and, hence, improving health outcomes - particularly chronically ill patients whom they enable to capture their illness-related data and have it analysed.

The introduction of electronic prescriptions in Germany does not just enhance efficiency; it also makes it easier for customers to get their prescription filled from the convenience of their home – another way in which we empower people to take charge of their health and further boost customer loyalty.

Balancing rapid growth with solid margins.

2020 was an extraordinarily successful financial year even by SHOP APOTHEKE EUROPE’s established standard of high and healthy growth rates. And we keep growing at a rapid pace across all our markets:  At the same time, we were able to balance this rapid growth with solid margins, breaking even on EBITDA level in 2020 for the first time since our IPO.

Boosted by the clear financial success and trust from investors, SHOP APOTHEKE EUROPE benefitted from its successful capital market initiatives: Following a capital increase of 65 million euros in April 2020, the company redeemed 135 million euros worth of convertible bonds with a coupon of 4.5% – initially scheduled for 2023 - well ahead of schedule, thereby massively saving on interest payments. In early January 2021, new convertible bonds with a coupon of 0.0% were successfully placed, further broadening the company’s scope for potential investments and acquisitions.

To ensure a company remains successful in the long term requires having a vision for the future and good planning. At SHOP APOTHEKE EUROPE, we have both. As the sudden dramatic increase in orders at the start of the Coronavirus pandemic showed, you always need to be prepared for sudden spikes in demand as well as for the impact of longer-term trends such as the shift to online shopping on your business model.

That’s why we have built a new, state-of-the-art logistics centre in Sevenum, the Netherlands. It does not just make sure we are ready for the future now but also offers a range of other benefits to the company:

  • We are more than doubling our capacity from approx. 39,000 parcels we were able to process and ship daily from the old Venlo site to over 100,000 a day, i.e. over 35 million a year.
  • That increase in capacity is not just due to additional space but also to our new custom-made warehouse management system specifically designed to meet our future needs, as well as higher degree of automation that will make work both faster and easier for our employees.

As an e-pharmacy we care – about our patients, about our employees and of course about our planet. Caring is not just in our DNA, sustainability is also becoming an increasingly important factor when consumers decide which companies they use. Therefore, our increased focus on environmental social governance will also have a long-term impact on our bottom line and help us recruit top talents.

In a major step, we started measuring our carbon footprint in 2020 to identify the best measures to reduce our carbon emissions Based on those measurements we offset 100% of our emissions in October 2020 and have become a carbon-neutral company. We have also implemented an internal carbon tax to incentivise departments to further reduce emissions in line with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.

Commited to supporting charitable organisations. 

At SHOP APOTHEKE EUROPE we sponsor Herzenswünsche, a charity  that grants wishes to children and youth affected by severe health issues. In the last years, we donated more than 450,000 euros to help bring happiness to the lives of severely ill young people. To ensure an optimal and long-lasting positive effect for the young patients, all wishes are fulfilled in consultation with the relevant physician, with the children’s families also involved in planning. 

Together for a healthier world. 

We also sponsor CARE, one of the world’s largest charitable organisations that aims to reduce poverty in more than 100 countries. Care has a special focus on disaster relief and the organisation works towards greater equality of women and girls. Currently, millions of people in almost 70 countries are supported by CARE in the fight against Covid-19.

Every order we receive is checked by our experienced pharmacists to make sure the medications do not interfere with each other. In accordance with the four-eyes principle, these interaction checks are conducted twice – because four eyes see more than one. If the team determines there is even a slight risk of a minor interaction, we will inform the customer in a letter enclosed with the package. If there is the risk of a serious interaction, we will contact both the patient and where applicable their doctor – because safety comes first.
